Do you think that alcohol and coffee are an odd combination? Well, think again because coffee drinks with alcohol are definitely a nice beverage to treat yourself after a long day. While the alcohol gives a drowsy effect, the coffee perks you up.
A bit contrasting, right? But the taste is surely not to be missed. I was hooked with the taste when my friend introduced me to this drink one day. I tried to search for some more varieties and discovered three of my favorite recipes.
What You’ll Need
For Recipe 1
For this alcoholic coffee drink recipe, you need about two shots or two ounces of espresso. This type of coffee is usually made from finely ground coffee beans and water. In Italy, sugar is often added to bring a little sweetness to the drink.
Nothing beats in making your own shot of espresso in an espresso machine. Other things that you’ll need in making an espresso are filtered water, 14 grams ground coffee beans, and a tamper to let water flow more evenly.
To make a nice latte, you need about four ounces of skim milk. This type of milk complements well to the bitter taste of espresso because it provides a sweet blend. Although it won’t offer much body to the drink, it makes the taste of espresso shine through.
Due to the absence of fat, this milk seems to taste sweeter as compared to other forms of dairy. What I love about this milk is you won’t have that gummy fat to stick to your palate.
To make your drink taste richer like genuine chocolate, you need about three tablespoons of chocolate syrup. If you’re concern about your sugar and calorie intake, choose a light version, like the Hershey’s Syrup Lite. This product has 50% less sugar and calories as compared to regular chocolate syrups.
Kahlua Coffee Liquor
Kahlua is a sugar-based liqueur that possesses the rich flavor and aroma of coffee. This Mexican drink also demonstrates a hint of vanilla. Other ingredients used by this coffee liquor include vodka, corn syrup, and sugar.
As compared to other alcoholic drinks, this coffee liquor contains a thicker body. Don’t be fooled by its sweet taste because it packs about 20% of alcohol by volume. For this drink recipe, you need about three tablespoons of Kahlua.
To serve a cold drink, you need some ice cubes to stir with the rest of the ingredients. You can use any amount of ice cubes. Just make sure that you fill the whole glass on the rocks to get the best chill.
For Recipe 2
For the second recipe, you need a cup of hot black coffee. You can order a cup of black coffee from coffee shops, like Starbucks, or you can make your own. To create your own cup of black coffee, you need a good coffee maker that can brew at about 200 degrees for less than a minute, just like this.
You also need about two tablespoons of coffee beans, preferably French Roast. To ensure the safety of your water, use bottled spring or filtered water.
The brown sugar will add sweetness to the blend of whiskey and black coffee. You need about two teaspoons of brown sugar to get the right balance of flavors. Brown sugar is favored over white sugar because it contains more minerals.
Irish whiskey is easy to drink because it has a smooth and sweet flavor. This unique taste profile may be due to the triple distillation process of the whiskey.
Unlike most Scotch which often peat the malt to give a smoky flavor, Irish whiskey rarely dries the barley over a hot peat. For this recipe, you need about one shot of Irish whiskey.
To give this drink a nice froth, some double cream may be necessary. This is a great addition to this coffee-based alcoholic drink because it can endure boiling temperature and whips pretty well. Before you add this to the mix, whip it slightly.
To keep the coffee hot longer, you need to preheat your drinking glass with boiling water. You can let the hot water sit for about a minute before you pour it away. The warming of the glass may seem to be an old tea tradition, but it also works in coffee.
Equipment And Utensil
You need a long-handled spoon to stir and mix all the ingredients. Ideally, a stainless steel coffee mixing spoon is ideal for both recipes. Unlike plastic, stainless steel doesn’t leach some toxic chemicals into the hot beverage.
You can use any beverage glass available in your kitchen for both coffee drinks with alcohol, but Recipe 2 may need a thick handle since you’ll be drinking a hot beverage. An anchor glass mug is a healthier option than a plastic mug because it doesn’t leach any chemicals into the drink.
Recipe 1- Chocolate-Coffee Latte
1. Brew Two Shots Of Espresso
To start brewing two shots of espresso, fill the reservoir of your espresso machine with filtered water. Next, turn on the machine and heat it up for about 15-45 minutes. After your machine is warm, lock a portafilter in the group head and operate it for a few seconds.
Next, remove the portafilter from the group head and wipe it dry. Fill the portafilter with 14 grams of ground coffee beans. Use a tamper to level the coffee beans by applying about 30-40 pounds of pressure and a gentle spin to level the beans evenly.
You can check how an espresso is made in this video here.
Once your beans are tamped well, place the portafilter back to the group head and start brewing. The shot should begin with a slow leak and then progress into an even flow. Stop the shot if you see that it begins bonding or starts to turn yellow.
2. Combine All Ingredients
Now that you the two shots of espresso ready pour it into your ice-filled beverage glass. Add the rest of the ingredients- four ounces of skim milk, three tablespoons of chocolate syrup, and two ounces of Kahlua.
3. Stir And Serve
Using a long-handled spoon, stir the drink to mix well. Serve while it’s still cold.
Recipe 2- Irish Whiskey Coffee
1. Make A Cup of Hot Black Coffee
To make a cup of hot black coffee, open the lid of the coffee maker and place the filter basket inside. Next, pour one cup of water and add two tablespoons of French Roast coffee. Close the lid securely and press the on/off button to work.
You can see how it’s done in this video here. After it’s done, you can pour the hot black coffee into a cup and set aside.
2. Combine All Ingredients
Before you start combining the ingredients, preheat your anchor glass mug by filling it with hot water up to the brim. Let the hot water sit for about a minute and pour it away in a sink.
After your glass is warm, add two teaspoons of brown sugar and a cup of black coffee. Using a long-handled spoon, stir the mixture until the sugar is fully dissolved. Add a shot of Irish whiskey and stir again.
3. Add Cream And Serve
After the ingredients are mixed well, top the drink with double cream by pouring it slowly. The best technique is to pour the cream over the back of a teaspoon. Serve to drink.
Some Additional Tips To Remember
1. Use The Correct Coffee Grind In Espresso
Coffee beans manufacturer The Coffee Company suggests using the right coffee grind in brewing a perfect espresso. The right grind of coffee should be similar to sand when kneaded between your fingers.
If the consistency is too coarse, then it often results to a weak brew. A very fine texture may make the coffee bitter.
2. Use Fresh Coffee Beans
If you want to have an optimum coffee taste, one-stop coffee shop Go Coffee Go recommends using the freshest coffee beans as possible. You can tell its age by looking at the roast date on the coffee bag. The more up-to-date the roast date, the better.
