Why You Have To Cool Your Cake

A cake is usually cooked at 325 degrees Fahrenheit in the oven for about 15-minutes or more. This means that freshly baked cake gets out of the oven bearing heat that might be hot enough to ruin other ingredients you plan on putting on top of your cake. ).

I remember working with a warm cake once, and I thought it was okay because the outside was not that hot even if the whole cake feels warm. To my mistake, I added the frosting immediately and what I found is that it doesn’t stick well to the cake because it keeps melting from the heat.

What’s more is that freshly baked cake has not settled yet. This means that when you are about to design a cake that comes fresh out of the oven, you will end up with a lot of messy crumbs.

Unless you are deeply running out of time, you must let your cake cool so that you will be able to effectively put your design on your cake. Otherwise, you might end up with a messy piece of bread with melted frosting or icing all over it.

How To Cool Your Cake

Once you are done baking your cake, you should take it out of the oven and let it sit on your counter for 30-minutes or so. If you don’t want to have cold cake, then you should leave it to cool on your counter for about an hour or two. Doing so would let the heat out from your cake, and would make it more workable when putting in your design.

Toothpick Test

To check if your cake has sufficiently cooled down, you can try using a small toothpick or a wooden barbecue stick. Try sticking it into the cake and let it stay in the cake for a couple of seconds. Once you’ve taken out your toothpick or barbecue stick, you can try and feel it if it’s still warm.

You should also watch out for cake bits that stick to your toothpick or barbecue stick. It could mean that you’re cake hasn’t been fully cooked through.

Fridge

If you are on a tight schedule or are working on more than one cake, you can hasten the cooling process by putting your cake in your fridge or freezer.

But before you put your cake in the refrigerator, you should make sure it’s no longer piping hot to avoid damaging your fridge. You should also cover it up with some cling wrap first so that the cake bread will not change in texture.

After leaving your cake in the fridge for 30-minutes or after an hour, your cake should be ready for frosting and other designs.

Frosting Your Cake

Once your cake has cooled completely, it’s time for the fun part, frosting! Now that your cake is no longer hot, you no longer risk melting your frosting.

To start frosting your cake, simply put it on a flat surface or on a rotating cake stand and make sure it stays firmly in place to avoid pushing it over the surface once you start spreading your frosting.

Once your cake is firmly in place, you can now spread a dab of frosting onto your cake until all sides of are completely covered. In doing so, you should apply a light hand to avoid deforming your cake with your spatula.

After designing your cake, you can either slice it then serve it on a plate, or you can let it cool once again by putting it in your fridge.
